It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s the world’s largest collection of Superman memorabilia.

Metropolis, Illinois: Home to the Man of Steel

So, you want a story? We’ll give you that and more.

Our friends at Heartland Weekend are taking you to Metropolis, Illinois.

The southern Illinois town is home to the Man of Steel.

The Super Museum opened in 1993.

Here, you’ll also find the world’s largest collection of Superman items. They are housed in the Super Museum.

Now in its 25th year, the museum remains a big draw for Super fans far and wide.

The collectibles are the product of Jim Hambrick’s enthusiasm for the Man of Steel.

He began collecting items as a child. Years later he and his family moved to Metropolis and opened what’s been called the No. 1 Small Town Attraction in America.

Among the 70,000+ items inside, you’ll find virtually every Superman toy ever produced as well as movie props and promotional materials from all the Superman movies & TV series, and one of the only George Reeves Superman costumes still in existence.

Some pieces date back to the 1930s.

The museum is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

It costs only $5 per person to check it all out. Kids under 5 are free.

Super fans also need to mark the Superman Celebration on their calendars. The city of Metropolis puts on a whole weekend dedicated to the Man of Steel each summer.
