More than 1,000 monarch butterflies were released at the Louisville Zoo‘s Flutter Fest on Saturday, September 23.

Visitors helped zoo officials tag the butterflies so their migration can be tracked. Tagging also helps monitor their population.

Some butterflies from the 2017 release at the Louisville Zoo were located more than 1,500 miles away in Mexico.

Flutter Fest also included other activities, such as crafts, storytime, educational talks and a parade.

Flutter Fest is a joint event with the Louisville Zoo and the Idlewild Butterfly Farm.
