Three new benches and chess tables were installed near Lily Pond at Shawnee Park Friday, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to celebrate the installation.
The park upgrades were made possible by LG&E and the Olmstead Parks Conservatory through a grant program.
“People should take advantage of it and don’t let it sit dormant,” Rhonda Mathies with the Shawnee Neighborhood Association said. “Come here and be playing chess so they can see people engaged in the game and teaching the young, the old, and each other the game of chess because it’s a family activity and anyone can get involved.”
With the help of Heine Brothers, Shawnee Park will also get floating plant islands that will help enhance Lily Pond’s health and beauty.
Shawnee Park also unveiled a brand new boat ramp last month.
