From Paristown’s skating rink to Light Up Louisville, Christmas joy is back in the city

The spirit of giving, sharing, and snow made its way to Louisville with a long list of events to bring some joy and laughter to a year that has had its ups and downs.

A group of the cutest elves in the city helped kick off the 41st Light Up Louisville, an event set to take place in person this year after being canceled in 2020. Mayor Fischer announced Santa’s plans at a press conference on Nov. 12.

In Jefferson Square Park, Santa arrives at 8 p.m. on Nov. 26 to light the tens of thousands of lights and the Christmas tree. Visitors will be able to pick up treats and crafts at Santa’s workshop on 6th Street. While they are there, they can also put their writing skills to work by writing letters to Santa and veterans as well as taking pictures on the holiday green screen.

Aniyh Mitchell, 10, and Alayah Brown, 9, were among those chosen to spread the holiday cheer. Mitchell said she was confident about her placement on the nice list, while Brown had to think about it. However, both girls expressed excitement for the snow and the chance to spend more time with family this year.

“I’m really happy that we can all be together again and celebrate together,” Brown said.

Mitchell and Brown said they will Santa with their wishes for reborn dolls and hoverboards.

“We can all go out and see fireworks and lights,” Mitchell said.

Other wintery-themed events in Louisville this year include the Winter Woods Spectacular at Iroquois Park, which runs from Nov. 26 to Dec. 26. Fete de Noel kicks off on Nov. 19 at Paristown with its ice-skating rink.

Shawnee Park will also host its first holiday park this year. The park will transform into a magical drive-thru with more than 200,000 lights, performances, and more.
