LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - A new Black-owned business has moved into the south Louisville area. Crown by Standard is a new Derby hat and fascinator shop that has been recognized by major publications.
Economic development leaders say around 3% of small businesses in Louisville are Black-owned. On Thursday, Oct. 24, Louisville Metro officials recognized efforts to raise those numbers by raising the standard.
Patricia Standard has had a background in fashion. So, helping people look good comes easy. It’s taken Standard two years to open her business, Crown By Standard, which features luxury Derby wear at an affordable price.

“I want them to feel confident, beautiful and just feel like they are on top of the world,” Standard said.
You’ll find Derby hats and fascinators in every shape and every color in the shop located off Raggard Road near the former Walmart Supercenter. In west Louisville and Shively, there’s not a lot of commercial space. Standard’s boutique is part of a new initiative working to turn abandoned and empty locations into something new.

“I wanted a shop that’s in the neighborhood because there are no shops here and some people don’t have a way to get out to the east end,” Standard said.

Ebony Magazine has recognized Standard as a standout milliner in Kentucky. It’s an accomplishment felt by the Louisville Urban League, LHOME, and the Small Business Development Center.
Even though she located in south Louisville, Standard wants to be there for the entire community. She says she’s planning on starting a mentorship program to help inspire young girls.
