LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Churchill Downs officials officially set the field for the 151st running of the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby.
More Information: Opening Night at Churchill Downs
The drawing was held in the new Paddock Terrace at Churchill Downs. Both post position draws were a traditional “pill pull”, where the horses’ entry blanks were pulled simultaneously with a numbered pill to determine which stall a horse will break from the starting gate.
Up to 24 three-year-olds may enter the 1 ¼-mile Derby race. Four horses can be listed as “also eligible” and would be ranked in order accordingly. These four horses could draw into the field should any of the 24 scratch before 9 a.m. on Oaks Day.
Only 18 horses may enter the 1 1/8-mile Oaks race. Similar to Derby, four horses can be listed as “also eligible” and could race should there be any scratches.
