Can’t find Ice Melt in stores? DIY recipe lets you make your own

With a massive winter storm bearing down on WAVE Country, lots of people have been out in search of Ice Melt at local hardware and home improvement stores. While supplies may be running low, there’s no need to worry. You can make your own, using this recipe from Reader’s Digest.

You’ll need:

  • 1/2 gallon hot water
  • 6 drops of dish soap
  • 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol

Combine the ingredients in a bucket and pour the mixture on your sidewalk or driveway.  When the snow and ice begins to bubble up and melt, simply scrape it away with your shovel.

Other natural de-icers include kitty litter, urea, alfalfa meal, sugar beet juice, sand and coffee grounds.
