Florists create garland of roses as thousands stop to watch

Thousands of people stop by the Middletown Kroger to watch how the garland is made.

Florists spent several hours Friday preparing the coveted Garland of Roses that will be presented to the winner of Kentucky Derby 145.

Thousands of people stopped by the Middletown Kroger to watch how the garland is made.

It takes the florists several hours to hand sew 450 roses into the garland.

Each stem in placed in an individual vial of water and it weighs about 40 pounds.

The florists often work well past midnight.

Saturday morning the garland of roses and jockey’s bouquet will be escorted by police in a chilled box to Churchill Downs.
