Friday’s air show practice brings crowds out to businesses ahead of Thunder Over Louisville

JEFFERSONVILLE, IN (WAVE) – Before Saturday’s air show begins, the planes needed to practice.

Many people filed into the riverfront on both sides of the Ohio River on Friday afternoon to get a sneak peak of what’s in store for Saturday.

At Buckhead Mountain Grill, Thunder Over Louisville is a huge day. They’ve held a party at their spot in Jeffersonville for the past 23 years and often see around 1,500 people.

Air Show Practice
A day before planes took over the downtown skies for Thunder Over Louisville, they took over the skies for a practice run.

But before Thunder gets here, many in Jeffersonville watch the air show practice from the patio and deck of Buckhead Mountain Grill. Spots fill up quickly.

“It’s really fun because you know, over the years, people have kind of figured out that today’s a good day to get a preview of the air show,” said Wes Johnson, owner of Buckhead Mountain Grill. “And so, we’re always busy for lunch. People love to come down, spend the afternoon and watch the planes practice for tomorrow.”

For Jim Benton, this is a tradition. For more than two decades, Benton and a dozen of his friends come out to the riverfront to watch the show on Fridays. He never misses it.

“Got rained on a few times, had to move the party inside a few times, but no, it’s a standing tradition for the lunch,” Benton said.
