Isaac Murphy: Keeneland, Maker’s Mark honor legendary Black jockey

Each year, Maker’s Mark teams up with Keeneland Race Course to create a special bourbon bottle that benefits charity.

This year, however, three such bottles will honor legendary Black jockey Isaac Murphy. It’s the first time in the promotion’s history that there will be three specialty bottles.

Artists Sandra Oppegard, Andre Pater and Tyler Robertson provided the designs for this year’s Maker’s Mark specialty bottles honoring Isaac Murphy.

Keeneland representatives said the red, black and blue label designs “depict the pageantry, beauty and power of Thoroughbred racing.”

Murphy won the Kentucky Derby three times, including back- to-back wins in 1890-91. He’s also the only jockey to have won the Kentucky Derby, Kentucky Oaks and the Clark Handicap in the same year (1884).

Money made from the bottles will benefit LexArts and the Isaac Murphy Memorial Art Garden.

The bottles are scheduled to go on sale Friday.
