Louisville woman hopes to inspire others on NBC show ‘Making It’

A Louisville woman has been keeping a big secret that is finally out. Kaviya Ravi is an artist and will be on a new season of the NBC Show “Making It.”

The 37-year-old moved to Louisville 15 years ago and said she loves the community and the new opportunities it has brought her.

“I came here following love,” Ravi said. “My husband works here and lives here.”

Kaviya Ravi is an artist and will be on a new season of the NBC Show “Making It.”

“Making It” is an NBC reality series hosted by former Saturday Night Live star Amy Poehler and actor Nick Offerman that follows craftspeople around the country who create some really cool products. The new season premieres on June 24, and Ravi is representing Louisville.

“I enrolled in the Hite Art Institute at the University of Louisville for interior architecture,” Ravi, who loved making jewelry, baskets, and furniture, said. “Fiber is my love language.”

Ravi embraces color. Her work has also been displayed in stores like Anthropologie. She said she had never heard of the show “Making It” until someone told her she should try out for the competition.

“Oh my God, it was the most surreal thing,” Ravi said.

She then flew out to Universal Studios in Los Angeles in October.

“Until I entered that barn, I started doing my first challenge, it was so surreal,” Ravi said.

She said it was an experience like no other that was undoubtedly stressful.

“Coming up with all these things in that short time frame, but still, at the end of it, it’s just happiness,” Ravi said. “My fellow makers, the eight of them, I just love them so much.”

Ravi can’t give out any spoilers or say if she won.

“It’s going to be a lot of tears, a lot of hugging, lots of love, lots of fun, and a few twists and turns and surprises,” Ravi said.

Ravi said she hopes she can inspire others who watch her on the show.

“I’m speaking from my own experience,” Ravi said. “Might be different for every other Southeast Asian brown woman out there. I don’t see people who look like me on the DIY-making community stage. It’s so rare. I’m hoping by seeing me on TV to try, experiment, and use those tools to learn, and maybe there is another Kaviya that wants to be in the creative field.”

The winner of “Making It” gets $100,000, and Ravi said if she got the money, she would use it to invest in her own store selling her work and other artists’ work.

Making It season 3 premiere airs on NBC/WAVE 3 News on June 24 at 8:00 p.m.
