Zoo officials made the announcement Thursday and said the pup has weaned from his mother, Rona.
Staff members allowed Rona to bond with her pup and complete the weaning process before checking the sex of the pup.
At 1-month-old, the pup weighs 146 pounds. Staff members said the average newborn weight for a gray seal is 30 pounds and it is common for seals to quadruple their weight during their nursing period.
The zoo will hold a naming contest for the pup. Details about the contest have not been announced.
