If you think you’re the king of the kitchen – you may want to step back and take some notes.
One area chef is helping to put Jeffersonville on the map.
Dallas McGarity, owner and executive chef at Portage House in Jeffersonville and at the Fat Lamb in the Highlands, can now call himself the Chopped champion after beating out other top chefs in his group for the title.
Inside the riverfront restaurant in Jeffersonville on Friday, the dining room stayed busy with dedicated customers coming in for lunch.
But back in October of 2017, he was competing on the show Chopped on the Food Network for a chicken-themed episode, turning masterpieces out of odd combos. Among his competitors, Peng Looi from August Moon in Louisville.
He said getting through the rounds wasn’t easy. Finding a way to use chocolate and chicken with fried rice and make it tasty was what put him over the top with the judges, McGarity said.
He won. But he couldn’t tell anyone until the episode aired this past week.
Keeping the secret was hard but watching his family’s reactions to his win made the wait worthwhile.
“That was my favorite part, like getting to look out into the crowd and seeing everybody on the edge of their seats and cheering, it was almost like a really good sporting event. I saw my kids, they were sitting on the edge of their couches with their hands clenched. So it was anxious for them, too! It was nice,” Dallas McGarity said.
McGarity said it’s been a great feeling seeing how supportive everyone in the community has been since his victory.
