Prepare yourself for road closures and no parking zones during Oaks and Derby

PHYLICIA ASHLEY | WAVE 3 News

With up to 45,000 people allowed to attend the 147th Kentucky Derby, getting the fans through the gates takes planning.

You will see fewer restrictions this year. Last year there were major preparations for expected protests. This year LMPD told us it hasn’t been alerted of any however it’s ready for anything.

Getting in and around the city of Louisville during Derby week can be a headache, if you don’t know the streets you will and will not have access to.

Closures include: Central Avenue from Taylor Boulevard to Floyd Street, 3rd Street from Iowa to Central Avenue and Oakdale Avenue from 3rd Street and Southern Parkway. Lieutenant Arnold Rivera from the LMPD traffic unit said this year the crowds are smaller and the closures and forces on the street will match that.

Louisville Metro police have released their traffic plan for the Churchill Downs area on Oaks Day and Derby Day. The plan includes road closures and no parking zones in the area around the racetrack.

“My primary focus and concern is the inbound and outbound flow of pedestrians and motorist,” Rivera said.

Officer Beth Ruoff, a LMPD spokesperson, said the extra fencing still up from 2020’s September Derby are for precaution. Last year LMPD shared protest plans and groups the department was communicating with at least a week prior to the event. This year no word yet. When asked Ruoff said so far there’s been no alerts of major protest groups.

“We will be ready and you know that fencing if of benefit of everybody,” Ruoff said. “Because around Derby time there’s always issues with pedestrians running through the roadway trying to cross in areas that they shouldn’t and its safety hazard.”

If you use ride share to get to and from the track, there’s a specific spot for that.

Taki and ride share pickups are located at UofL’s Cardinal Stadium and you can only request a ride once you are physically at 3rd and Central Avenue.
