Jockey Mike Smith will ride Omaha Beach in this year’s Kentucky Derby, according to a report from the Daily Racing Form.
Smith steered the Richard Mandella-trained Omaha Beach to victory in Saturday’s Arkansas Derby, just seven days after winning the Santa Anita Derby aboard Bob Baffert’s Roadster.
Observers had kept a close eye on Smith, wondering which horse he would pick. Many thought he’d select Roadster, considering he won the Triple Crown with Baffert’s Justify last year.
“I just got the call,” Mandella told DRF on Tuesday afternoon. “We’re good. Mike Smith. I’m very happy.”
Omaha Beach arrived at Churchill Downs on Tuesday.
