Now in its sixth year, Thurby will once again mark the official kickoff to Kentucky Derby weekend at Churchill Downs on May 2.
This year’s event will celebrate the late, famed writer and Louisville native Hunter S. Thompson, as well as illustrator Ralph Steadman.
Steadman partnered with Churchill Downs and the Speed Art Museum to produce an original painting to celebrate Thurby Goes Gonzo 2019. The artwork will be available for purchase for $25.
Steadman attended his first Kentucky Derby in 1970 with Thompson, and he’ll sign the posters at Churchill between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
First post on May 2 is scheduled for 12:45 p.m. Tickets start at $22.
